Alex Thompson is Professor - Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology, Duke University Medical Centre.
His research focuses on improving outcomes for people living with hepatitis. He is a clinical investigator in trials evaluating the efficacy of new treatments for viral hepatitis. He has been actively pursuing new models of care for people living with viral hepatitis, with a focus on prisoners and community-based care for high prevalence populations.
Alex has written guidelines on the management of hepatitis C, hepatitis B, HCC and non-invasive assessment of portal hypertension. He has previously been the Chair of the GESA Liver Faculty as well as an Executive Council Member of the Asia-Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL).
He is an Associate Editor of the journal Hepatology and a former Associate Editor of the journal Liver International. He has published more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals including Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gut and Journal of Hepatology.
