Jacob has presented at both national and international obesity meetings in addition to authoring multiple publications in leading obesity journals including Obesity Surgery and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. A particular interest is the deleterious impact of obesity on liver function and how obesity surgery can reverse these changes. Jacob is a member of professional upper gastrointestinal and obesity surgery bodies OSSANZ, IFSO and ANZGOSA. Jacob was appointed the president of ANZMOSS in 2022. Jacob continues to be involved in the provision of bariatric surgery in the public hospital setting as well. Jacob performed the first sleeve gastrectomy at Flinders Medical Centre in 2010.
Jacob also provides bariatric surgical services to the liver transplant unit at Flinders Medical Centre which includes concurrent and post liver transplant sleeve gastrectomy. Jacob believes in an individualised approach to obesity surgery rather than one operation for all. He is experienced in gastric band, gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) and gastric bypass all performed as a keyhole procedure. He also has experience in revisional surgery, in particular the conversion of gastric band to gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy through the keyhole approach.
Jacob is also interested in novel endoscopic (through the mouth) techniques for the management of obesity and is proficient in endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon and Endobarrier insertion
