Dr Michael De Gregorio is a consultant gastroenterologist and an Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinician-research fellow at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He became a fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2020) and was awarded an Australian Commonwealth Government scholarship to undertake a PhD at the University of Melbourne (2020-present). His research focuses on the optimisation of medical and surgical management in perianal fistulising Crohn’s disease, with an interest in biologic drugs and therapeutic drug monitoring. Dr De Gregorio was central in the development of a new protocolised multi-disciplinary treatment strategy for patients with perianal fistulising Crohn’s disease at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Furthermore, he was key in the development and rollout of a national multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating proactive concentration-based biologic dosing in adults with active perianal fistulising Crohn’s disease, titled PROACTIVE; which is an investigator-initiated trial, successfully awarded an NHMRC Medical Research Future Fund for Efficient Use of Existing Medicines Grant.
