Professor Murray Barclay

Murray Barclay is a Gastroenterologist and Clinical Pharmacologist at Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand, and a Clinical Professor with the University of Otago. He is a previous President of the NZ Society of Gastroenterology, Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology NZ, and ex-President of the NZ senior doctors union, the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists. His research activities have been predominantly in IBD, including epidemiology, genetics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics. One main interest however is in therapeutic drug monitoring, crossing several specialties but especially regarding drug treatments for inflammatory bowel disease.  These include the thiopurines, biologics, methotrexate and allopurinol.  Other interests include clinician burnout and equity, both amongst doctors and patients. He is currently working with Douglas Pharmaceuticals in NZ to develop novel oral and rectal formulations of thioguanine for IBD treatment. He initiated and manages the web teaching tool Interactive Clinical Pharmacology (icp.org.nz). He has over 200 journal publications, many related to drug monitoring, and H-index of 64. He is an avid Crusaders (rugby) supporter, although not so much this year!
