Cherry Koh

A/Prof Koh is a researcher and academic colorectal surgeon with an interest in surgical outcomes and advanced colorectal cancers. She is the Associate Professor of Surgical Outcomes at the University of Sydney and is a Director at the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney Local Health District. She is also holds the position of Clinical Research Lead (Colorectal Surgery) with the RPA Institute of Academic Surgery; and is a Council member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand (CSSANZ).

A/Prof Koh oversees numerous research projects emanating from SOuRCe, especially those from the Pelvic Exenteration Program and the PREMIER database for peritoneal surface malignancy in addition to managing her own research projects focused on improving patient outcomes.

 A/Prof Koh has particular interests in surgical outcomes and in advanced gastrointestinal malignancies. She is an investigator on a number of important randomised trials in this field. Three of these have received substantial funding including the PRIORITY trial which has been successfully awarded NHMRC funding; and the PRIORITY-CONNECT 2 and HyNOva trials which have received MRFF funding.

A/Prof Koh has extensive experience in clinical surgical research and has published 160 peer reviewed papers, 7 book chapters and has been invited to present 139 domestic and international presentations. She has also mentored 6 Higher degree students and 24 medical students.

Over her career, A/Prof Koh has significantly contributed to surgical fraternity through various activities including sitting on the scientific committee for a number of professional societies and conference committees including the Tripartite Colorectal meeting (the largest international colorectal conference which is held triennially shared between Australasia, North Americas and the United Kingdom as well as Europe), the section of Academic surgery of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the AGITG (Australian Gastrointestinal Trials Group). Internationally, she is part of the PelvEx collaborative which is an international collaborative of pelvic exenteration surgeons. In addition to this, A/Prof Koh has built enduring relationship with clinicians in Leeds and Newcastle (in the United Kingdom) for prospective quality of life studies in patients with locally recurrent rectal cancers. Other than cancer related research, she also has clinical and research collaborations with gastroenterologists and dieticians on the subject of intestinal failure.
